To open the throat manipulate the only thing that can be moved: the base of the tongue....It must move forward. That's it. Period. When you try it you'll understand. Many teachers love to confuse to keep students; don't fall for it...move that base of the tongue forward to see how easy it is.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02414299423714836525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923813891001957012.post-19730480252339128212010-05-05T01:46:55.910-04:002010-05-05T01:46:55.910-04:00I so admire the tack you are taking toward this. ...I so admire the tack you are taking toward this. Thanks for the wake-up...Hi, Nanette (aka Wildcat).

Thanks for the wake-up call. I needed to hear this and apologize for discouraging you and any of my other readers in the quest for improved singing. (Thank goodness for 30-year friends who can just come out and let you know when you've gone off the deep end!)

Your comments have brought me to take another look at my beliefs about learning to sing. . .and how I write about them. In my enthusiasm for helping people not to get themselves in vocal trouble, I have over-emphasized some concepts and implied some things that, on reflection, I don't even believe myself.

I will have to acknowledge something for myself as well as for my readers. Part of the learning process -- an inevitable part -- is going wrong. I have not avoided mistakes and misinterpretations in my own lessons, even under my best teachers, and will not be able to insulate others from them either. With diligence, we will all eventually outgrow or overcome our erroneous thinking and become stronger and wiser for having gone through this evolution.

Nanette, you have inspired me to approach my writing from a new angle. I think I have so far perhaps dedicated maybe just the teensiest bit too many words on showing how difficult it is to learn to sing and to how important a teacher is to that process. From now on, I promise to focus on what we can all do -- alone or with the guidance of a teacher -- to improve our singing and ourselves.

I will start by revising my latest post on opening the throat along these new lines. (This may take me a day or two, as it will be out of my habitual comfort zone!) I'd love to hear from readers what they think of this revision in approach.

MichaelMichael Hankohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00578621509967600184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923813891001957012.post-89321126576582300872010-05-04T01:53:03.579-04:002010-05-04T01:53:03.579-04:00Okay, I know that this isn't what you are goin...Okay, I know that this isn't what you are going for, but here's what I'm feeling recently as I read the blog. I don't know how to sing. I'm doing everything wrong. There's no point in trying on my own. No, I don't need an anti-depressant.
